[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Have you received a massage gift certificate? Or, you might just want to get a massage but never tried to do so. Well, it can be scary or awkward to think about somebody you don’t know rubbing your body. It might be more awkward when you realize that massage sessions last for about an hour more.
Think about it. More and more people are getting massages every single day. And that includes grown men. So, there must be some type of unwritten rules regarding massage therapy for men. Well, actually, there are rules to follow when having a massage.
If you’re wary of this unwritten code, you will have a more enjoyable massage experience. And it’s not just for you. It’s for the therapist as well. Included below are points to remember when having a massage. This will help you reap the benefits of the amazing therapy.
But First, Which Gender?
Here’s a big problem face by most men when choosing a therapist. Should you choose a female or a male therapist? If you’re a man and you choose a female therapist, does it equate to cheating? And, if you’re straight does it mean you’re gay if you get a male therapist? Well. Here’s the answer to both questions: a big NO.
It all boils down to your own preferences. Some men are hesitant to get a female therapist. But massage therapy is about health and relaxation. It’s not about seduction or anything sensual. With that being said, opting for a male therapist isn’t a problem too. Whatever works best for you is great. You can try both male and female therapists and find out which you prefer.
Massage Etiquette For Men
Shower First, Please
Put yourself in the therapists’ shoes. Do you want to rub your hands down on somebody who just went to the gym? Do you want to massage a person who just did construction work? Of course, you don’t. It’s best to eliminate any odor you might have and attend your therapy sessions fresh and clean. Take a shower first and hop in with clean clothes. You might also want to clip your nails as the therapist might rub your hands and feet.
Don’t Be Late
It’s best to be early for about 15 minutes before your actual session. You still have to do paperwork about your health background before the session. Plus, you have to communicate to the therapist with regards to your preferences.
If you’re late, you’re simply shorting yourself on actual
massage time. Because the paperwork and discussions with your therapist is necessary. As you become a regular client, you can hop in 5 minutes early before your session starts.
Turn Your Phone Off
Massage therapy sessions are meant for relaxation. And during that time, you wouldn’t want your phone to be ringing off. You can put your phone in silent mode and turn off vibration as well. Even vibrations can be heard in a quiet, solid room. But it’s still recommended to turn your phone off completely. A phone is not immortal. It needs rest as well.
Undress Only Until You’re Comfortable
Usually, the therapist will tell you to undress only until you’re comfortable before beginning the session. They will leave the massage room and give you the option to undress yourself. After which, you simply have to get on the massage table and place a towel or a sheet over the lower section of your body.
You can keep your underwear on or you can go nude full blast. It really depends on what you’re comfortable with. No one will judge you for being butt naked. And no one will criticize you for keeping your underwear on.
However, being drop down nude will make it easier for the therapist to work with you. No clothing barrier is present allowing them to truncate their motions. Thus, if you’re comfortable with being naked, then go for it.
If you decide to go naked, your private parts still won’t be exposed. Yes, you will be asked to move and turn around during the massage session. However, therapists are experienced in keeping your jewels hidden under the sheet as they’ve done this thousands of times.
It’s normal to feel awkward and uncomfortable being naked during your first massage session. However, if you do become a regular, you’ll become more comfortable being nude. Remember that you are working with a therapist who constantly sees and works with nude bodies every single day. They won’t find any of your nudity interesting as they are professionals who adhere to strict code of ethics.
Always Communicate
Do you feel pain? Is the pressure too much? Well, you can tell the
massage therapist everything. Usually, the therapist will ask you how much pressure you want during the session. If you’re unsure, your massage therapist can experiment with you until you find the right degree of pressure you feel comfortable with.
It is best to communicate with your massage therapist whether you like something or not. If they’re doing something wrong, say so. The therapist would be happy to know that you’re communicating what you want.
Before the session begins, you can also tell the massage therapist to avoid touching certain parts of your body. If you don’t want your buttocks to be massaged, tell them beforehand. Or, if you’re ticklish at the feet, say so.
Communicating is an important part of the therapy. Feedback is fine and perfectly acceptable. Small conversations are okay as well. However, it is not necessary to have a chat with your therapist if you don’t feel like it. It’s totally okay to close your eyes, relax, and be silent. Falling asleep is fine as well. Your therapist won’t see it as being rude.
What About Passing Gas And Erections?
During a massage, passing gas is very common. You become relaxed to the point where the gas simply just has to go. If you pass gas, don’t worry, the therapist won’t mind as it’s a common occurrence during massage sessions.
While a little gas here and there won’t be offensive, it is still okay to visit the restroom when you have to go beyond than that. Pausing the session is normal. If you need to pee, it’s perfectly fine as well. Timeouts during massage sessions are common.
Some men do get erections during massage therapy sessions. This is not common. However, you shouldn’t be embarrassed about it. It does happen sometimes and the therapist won’t mind. He or she will simply ignore it.
Don’t Ask Questions About Sexual Favors
Don’t ask questions or even joke about sexual favors. It will offend your therapist. And you will most likely be kicked out or banned from the clinic. This is obviously a NO-NO that you should understand by now.
Tip, Tip, Tip
It’s pretty common to give around 15% to 20% tips. You can either give it to the front desk or directly to the therapist. Or, you also have the alternative to charge it to your credit card bill. If you have a gift certificate, bring cash so you can give your therapist a tip. However, if the gift certificate covers tips as well, then it might be unnecessary to give tips unless you really want to do so.
To Wrap It All Up
Massage can be a very relaxing experience for both men and women. However, most men are embarrassed to get massages and would be hesitant to do so to avoid awkward situations. It is important to take note of these massage etiquette for men in order to get the best experience. You can find a
nearby massage clinic or ask recommendations from friends to find the best therapist for your needs.
